Home: Day 1516, 2025, acrylic and graphite on canvas, by Natalia Cárdenas de Bedout (Colombia, 1972). In her practice, Cárdenas invites us to reflect on the concept of home through the recurring image of a painting depicting the archetype or representation of a house. Looking beyond the subtle variations in form, color and lines that shape this unstable house allows us to reflect on the states of vulnerability inherent in something as basic and fundamental as the sense of security that home provides: that indescribable feeling of being in the right place—in a safe place. This body of work highlights Cárdenas’s masterful use of color as she explores a profoundly human meditation: What constitutes a “home”? From emotional grounding and the sense of belonging, to housing insecurity, real estate speculation, immigration, and displacement—even the intimate act of inhabiting one’s own body—
this series invites us to rethink where and how we truly feel at home. What is it? What does “home” mean? What is it that gives us that sense of security, that makes us feel we are in that place to which
we truly belong?
